At First United Methodist Church, we have a range of study and ministry opportunities for adults.
Growing in faith is a life-long journey, and there are many different ways to engage the Word and the world. We invite you to take part in a Sunday morning class during the 9 o’clock hour, share your musical gifts through one of our music ministries for adults, learn more about helping with children and youth at First UMC, or to participate in a weekday small group or other service opportunity.
Adult Classes & Small Groups
Trinity Class: Meeting year-around at 9 AM in our First Floor Lounge, the class selects relevant books to read and discuss. Our theme is “open hearts, open minds, open doors.” All are welcome, our topics are varied (and we’re sure to go off topic at least once), and each week a different participant leads discussion.
Men’s Prayer Breakfast: On Thursdays from 7 – 8 AM at the Union Street Diner, men of varying ages and stages of life from our Church gather for study, prayer and breakfast. And usually a little bit of off-topic discussion.
FOCUS: Meeting on Thursdays at 12:15 PM (Sept. – May) in Fellowship Hall, our group discusses the forthcoming Sunday’s scripture reading.
Small Groups: throughout the week, several small groups meet to discuss faith and highlighting small group questions from Sunday’s sermon topic.
There are a variety of ways to use your gifts and talents to show God’s love by serving within the ministries of First United Methodist Church.
Greeters, ushers, connection corps, and altar guild servants are just some of the role through which you can serve on Sunday morning. We also invite you to serve in one of out many, ongoing ministries through which we Show God’s Love.
Our worship services are intended to help you know God through engaging worship, biblical teaching, and inspiring music. We offer two unique worship services with children’s ministry and childcare at each service. Join us!
Chapel – 9 AM
Our early worship service highlights the rich traditions of our United Methodist heritage. You can worship God through the singing of hymns from the United Methodist Hymnal, participating in classic responsive readings and worship elements such as the Gloria Patri and Doxology, and prayerful reflection. Special music is occasionally offered. Pastor Robert McDowell shares an insightful message each week to help us know God more fully and grow in our faith. Sunday School classes for children and youth are offered at this time. Nursery care is available.
Sanctuary – 10:30 AM
Our late worship service begins at 10:30 a.m., and offers a traditional style of worship within a modern context. You can worship God through the singing of songs from a broad range of sources and a variety of styles, participating in responsive readings, liturgies and rituals which span the Christian tradition and prayerful reflection. The Chancel Choir leads us in worship, along with other instrumental choirs. Pastor Robert shares an insightful message each week to help us know God more fully and grow in our faith. Children are invited to participate in a Children’s Moment and then join the Director of Children’s Ministry for Children’s Church. Nursery care is available.
